Building on @m_lopez58βs pad idea: I keep a 77mm camera circular polarizer in my pouch β use a phone or tablet screen as the polarized backlight, hold the filter to your eye and rotate to βnullβ and the stress bands jump out, even in tight corners. Itβs tiny and quick, but ditch polarized safety glasses or youβll chase phantom patterns, and watch for PWM flicker on some screens by cranking brightness.
Iβve had good luck using the blue sky about 90Β° to the sun as the polarized backlight with a pocket linear polar sheet at my eye β Sharpie a mark at the extinction angle so I can repeat checks across panes; itβs fast in the field but useless on gray days. @m_lopez58 this pairs nicely with your pad for indoor shots.
I keep a folding 2Γ jewelerβs loupe with a square of linear polar film taped on the eye side β tiny, gets me right up to edges, and I just rotate until the pattern snaps in.
